Recently, Jason Hope has taken to the internet to bring to people’s attention the various benefits and challenges that widespread growth of the Internet of Things will carry with it. Hope sees major challenges ahead, but he believes that we will collectively be able to surmount them.
The benefits and costs of self-driving trucks
Already, the Internet of Things looms large, even if still largely behind the scenes. Recently, Uber made the first long-haul delivery by a self-driving truck. While this news may seem to some little more than tech trivia, it’s far from it.
Uber has, with this feat, essentially proven the concept of self-driving trucks. We can expect, at a minimum, that there will be a major rollout of this technology within the next five to ten years. The most extreme current estimates, espoused by more than a few expert observers, is that the nation’s entire trucking industry could be radically overhauled by self-driving vehicles as early as 2025. This has huge benefits in terms of costs of shipping. But it also will present a gigantic challenge to the workforce of truck drivers.
The driving occupations make up, by some estimates, as much as 3 percent of the entire U.S. workforce. Complete elimination of that many jobs will have serious consequences for millions of workers and for the state of government welfare programs.
