Robert Ivy Leads Architecture Into The Artistic Light

For the first time ever, the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to an architect. Robert Ivy, the EVP and Chief Executive Officer at the American Institute of Architects will be the recipient for his efforts in the field of architecture. His contributions to his field in writing and commentary have made a significant impact on the world of architecture and made it more accessible to the public. This award is bestowed upon living artists and art patrons who have a significant connection to Mississippi and whose work is significant and deserving of recognition. The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters present this award annually to a creative person who has shown an exceptional commitment to the arts over their lifetime.

His work as CEO of AIA is exemplary and the organization now boasts its highest membership level in the 160-year history of its existence which now includes new chapters in Canada and China. Before joining AIA in 2011, Robert Ivy served as the Editor-in-Chief at McGraw-Hill’s Architectural Record. During his time there the journal became the most widely read publication in its field. Under his leadership, the journal earned the National Magazine Award for General Excellence according to bizjournals.com. Additionally, he started a Mandarin version of the Architectural Record for distribution in China.

In 2001, he authored a biography of Fay Jones which is now in its third edition. The national architecture fraternity, Alpha Rho Chi, honored Robert Ivy as Master Architect for his skill in communications specifically as it relates to the value of design. Only seven people in 100 years have received this designation and he is the first to receive it in the 21st century. His name now appears along with distinguished architects such as Richard Buckminster Fuller, I.M. Pei, and Miles van der Rohe, who have also received recognition from the fraternity in the past.
